Flourish 2021 Line Up Announcement: Introducing Jan Gillies

Jan’s career as a teacher, senior mistress, DP, inspector, principal, assistant director (social justice), director (quality assurance and school review), mirrors Queensland education and social policy agendas from 1963 to 1997.

With visionary, innovative Queensland educators, Jan led the Social Justice Strategy 1993-4, a practical framework for gender-equitable schools inclusive of students historically marginalised by disability, poverty and isolation.

Reforms took root in many schools and hopefully flourish still. When Government policy shifted to measuring performance, Jan shifted to consultancy, supporting visionary school leaders, training statewide in child protection for the Children’s Commission, volunteering, being a gran and singing jazz.

‘What we wish Catrin and her peers had learned about relationships/keeping safe/ sexuality while they were in school’.

Jan Gillies joins her granddaughter Catrin Culla to talk about ‘What we wish Catrin and her peers had learned about relationships/keeping safe/ sexuality while they were in school’.

Catrin is 21. She’s in the workforce, loves pop songs and movies and longs for the love, romance and intimacy they promise. Catrin has Down Syndrome and sadly, there have been incidents and issues.

Unfortunately, Catrin’s counsellor, Dr Natasha Alexander from Consentability won’t be able to attend the event, but her Grandmother Jan joins Catrin to reflect on the question: ‘What we wish Catrin and her peers had learned about relationships/keeping safe/ sexuality while they were in school’.
