CEO Deanne Carson talks to Newstalk ZB about asking children for consent before changing nappies.
Body Safety Australia’s CEO Deanne Carson spoke to Heather du Plessis-Allan at NewstalkZB about the idea of asking children for permission before changing nappies and how this “kooky idea” is actually a lot more like “good parenting”.
While the knee-jerk reaction from some parents or members of the community may be incredulous or in some more interesting cases, outrage, in just 4 minutes Heather and Deanne manage to cover all the objections and acknowledge the challenges and balance between being a busy parent and treating children with dignity.
We invite anyone who is interested in opportunities to teach consent and give agency to their children, particularly around their nappy change, to listen to this piece.
We would especially like to encourage those who think this notion is “crazy” to have a listen, it doesn’t even take an open mind to consider the rights and needs of a human being, whether they are a child or adult.
At worst, you might pick up some tips for handling difficult changing times and preventing tantrums, sparing yourself and your child from combative nappy changes in the future.
