Body Safety Australia's statement for Palestine
Body Safety Australia pays witness to the grief of Palestinian people and the horror continuing to unfold in Gaza.
Our mission is to promote childhoods free from violence, where children enjoy equitable and respectful relationships. Our work challenges the systemic power imbalances that allow for the use of power to harm others. We now call on Israel and zionists to reflect on how the oppressed can become the oppressor when power structures and systems are leveraged for gain at the expense of others.
We seek to listen to the voices of children and young peope - those in classrooms, at rallies, on social media and who have been compelled to organise and participate in student walk-outs. They are calling for an end to violence and a commitment to peace.
We are an organisation that stands firmly and proudly with First Nations peoples, promotes disability justice and advocates against sexual violence and coercive control. We centre the voices of young people in the work that we do. Our Youth Advisory Committee has recently established our Ethos of Advocacy: “none of us are free until all of us are free”. We recognise that all forms of oppression are intertwined. To stand for social justice then is to fight for Palestinian freedom.
We uphold this statement of freedom and will continue to listen to and advocate for the voices of children and young people everywhere.
Head of Education, Lauren French, speaks at the 2022 Indigenous Wellbeing Conference.
"The past two days at the Indigenous Wellbeing Conference have been filled with inspiration, beautiful yarns and passionate calls for action. Lauren presented on empowerment and strength; best practice in child sexual abuse prevention. Lauren explained how while First Nations children are 2-4 times more likely to face this abuse, we need to take a strengths based approach. Focusing on deficits does nothing to help our young mob, but it can keep them vulnerable."
