Flourish 2021 Line Up Announcement: Colleen Mitrow and Jacqueline Clevens

Introducing: Colleen Mitrow

ScreenShot2021 05 24at8.07.26pmDuring Colleen's teaching career, she found that the children with the greatest needs were often those alienated in and excluded from the education system.

Colleen was the founding Principal of Southside Education and Hymba Yumba Community Hub.

In consultation with the school communities, the Searchlight Education model was developed where both the personal and education needs of students could be met - where Caring and Learning go hand in hand. Each student, regardless of background, is welcomed into the school community and treated with unconditional positive regard.

Many support services were established within the schools to support young people experiencing trauma in their lives so that they could focus on gaining an education. This multidisciplinary model included a Family Centre and Creche for young Mothers attending school.

Hymba Yumba Community Hub, a P to 12 school, was designed to provide education from birth to work and to be owned and operated by Indigenous Australians.

Colleen believes in prioritising equity of education opportunities for all young people and the urgent need to explore ways of making this a reality.
